Home Flight Chaplain Defined

A Flight Chaplain is called to this ministry, and is trained for it.  Like competent professionals in the medical field, training and skills are required.

APFC believes that the training and job qualifications for Professional Flight Chaplains should be consistent with those for trained and certified hospital chaplains.  Moreover, particular CPE training in Flight Chaplaincy should be required.

Therefore, APFC recommends and supports these qualifications:

Master's in Divinity or Theology, with an emphasis in pastoral care and counseling;  minimum of four (4) units of hospital-based Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE);  two (2) units of trauma/Flight Chaplaincy CPE training. (Relevant vocational experience may be credited toward some of the CPE requirements.)

In support of Flight Chaplaincy training, APFC is currently developing curriculum for trauma/Flight Chaplaincy CPE training, in consultation with its CPE oversight Board of Advisors.  APFC is also seeking funding for curriculum development through grants, foundations and donors.
