#1. A BROKEN HEART -- YOUR OWN. A painful transport? A mistake made? How to survive those intense emotions no one talks about.
A. Description. The emotional side of air medical transport work is often neglected, and the consequences to crewmembers can be devastating. Too often, the 'tough guy' image prevails. This presentation is aimed at helping crews be honest about such feelings, and discover ways to cope that are healthy emotionally, spiritually, and physically. Taking such steps can help save careers, improve crew morale on the job, and assure healthier personal lives.
B. Outline. 1. The worst has happened. Grief and anguish, and other intense emotions experienced in air medical transport will be identified and discussed; 2. Ways crews tend to cope - the good, the bad, the ugly; 3. The physical and emotional consequences of NOT dealing with painful emotions; 4. Why grief and other painful emotions are important and necessary; 5. Healthy ways to cope - physically, spiritually, emotionally. 6. Who to talk to - and not to talk to - and why; 7. How crews can assist each other emotionally, and positively impact the quality of medical care provided in the future.
